HOSPITAL HEALTH
Las Vegas offer high medical standards and a highly qualified medical staff.

With approximately 2 million residents and hundreds of thousands more living in surrounding rural areas, plus more than 350,000 visitors per day, Las Vegas has good reason to offer high medical standards and highly qualified medical staff.

“We look to achieve indicators that put us on a par with hospitals in cities that people are moving from, such as Chicago or L.A.,” says Amy Dirks Stevens, system vice president for the Sunrise Health Market, a division of Hospital Corporation of American (HCA). “We’ve had to build really high-end [medical] systems.”

Opened nearly 50 years ago, Sunrise Hospital occupies Nevada’s largest hospital campus and has been a Consumer Choice award-winning hospital for 12 consecutive years. The hospital assists more patients than any other in the state and accepts 400 transfers per month from other hospitals, and from neighboring states including Arizona, Utah and California. Its nationally certified Comprehensive Cancer Program also has a No. 1 rating.

This is where you’ll find Nevada’s only Gamma Knife for incision-less brain surgery, only surgical robotics program, plus a national training site; first and only comprehensive breast program; and the region’s sole 24/7 in-house neurologists, with hospital-based outpatient neurology clinic. Sunrise Hospital provides the region’s only Primary Stroke Center, accredited by the Joint Commission, and is the sole local hospital with 24-hour
neuroradiology services.

For the Children
As the state’s only dedicated children’s hospital, Sunrise Children’s Hospital performs all pediatric open-heart procedures, catheters and arterial shunts for patients throughout the region. It offers the only 24-hour pediatric emergency department with in-house critical care physicians 24/7; the only certified pediatric end-stage dialysis program in the state; treatment for 80 percent of all inpatient pediatric oncology cases in the state, 60 percent of all pediatric neurosurgeries and 75 percent of tumors; and the second-largest medical school residency program in the Valley.

The Siena Campus of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals recently opened the first Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the Southern Valley, with 15 beds and complete neonatal treatment for medically fragile infants, while other St. Rose hospitals offer Level II NICUs. Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, in the master-planned community of Summerlin, is considered Valley Health System’s ‘pediatric hospital’ — with pediatric inpatient, outpatient and ICU services.

The Largest Local Health System
Valley Health System is the Valley’s largest hospital group. Centennial Hills Hospital, opened in January 2008, focuses on primary care. Built in 1979, Valley Hospital Medical Center is a teaching hospital in cooperation with the osteopathic program at Touro University and offers a transfusion-free
medicine and surgery program, says Karla J. Perez, vice president of Acute Division and group vice president for the health system’s parent company, Universal Health Services Inc.

Desert Springs Hospital completes more open-heart procedures than any other local hospital and houses a Bariatric Center of Excellence and the first Joint Commission-accredited diabetes center in the nation. Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center’s primary care services include open-heart procedures.
Valley Health System’s telephone physician referral system is available around-the-clock, and its Senior Advantage program offers free education programs in all hospitals, such as safe driving, CPR certification and cardiac care, Perez says. For a one-time fee of $10, seniors also receive cards that provide discounts to local businesses and waive inpatient co-pays.

Not-for-Profit Medical Care
St. Rose Dominican Hospitals are the only not-for-profit, religiously sponsored hospitals in Southern Nevada. “It’s the spiritual aspect that really makes us different,” says Andy North, director of Public Policy and External Affairs. “[The hospitals are] very aesthetically pleasing, with several healing gardens, and the only public labyrinth in Southern Nevada is at San Martin campus.”

St. Rose Dominican de Lima campus and San Martin campus have new Level II NICUs, which treat 32-week and older preemies, while Siena campus recently opened a Level III NICU for premature infants. St. Rose de Lima offers mini-gastric bypasses for patients who are 100 pounds or less overweight, and the Siena campus provides award-winning open-heart surgery and cardiology programs, according to HealthGrades, an independent healthcare ratings company, plus it’s well known for joint replacement services. San Martin’s opened an open-heart surgical center in late 2007 and also offers joint replacement.

As you can see, Las Vegas-area hospitals offer numerous care options. The choice is up to you.
